Portal 2 Custom Level: Portal(Less)



 

​WHAT IS PORTAL 2?





Portal 2 is a First Person Perspective Puzzle videogame Developed by Valve Corporation


The player must solve a series of Puzzles using Portals to escape the Testing area.

Also playing with the use of other Scientific resourses like beams, lasers, light bridges and Liquid gels to aid the player to solve the puzzle room.

 

CUSTOM LEVEL

This Map editor gives a variety of assets to develop the custom level such as:

Buttons:

  • Pedestal Button.

  • Simple Button.

  • Cube Button.

  • Sphere Button.



Cubes:

  • Weighted Cube.

  • Companion Cube.

  • Edgeless Cube (Sphere).

  • Reflection Cube.

  • Franken Cube.



Platforms:

  • Simple Floor (Default).

  • Piston Platform.

  • Track Platform.

  • Stairs.

  • Light Bridge.



Puzzles - Traps:

  • Laser Emitter.

  • Laser Reciever.

  • Laser Relay.

  • Fizzler (Light Wall).

  • Faith Plate.

  • Tractor Beam.

  • Turrets.

  • Laser Field.



Different Types of Walls:

  • Simple Wall (Default).

  • Glass.

  • Flip Panel.

  • Angled Panel.

  • Glass Panel.

  • Observation Room (Decoration).

FIRST SKETCHES

The project started as an University Assignment. I worked with my classmate Joan Ramón to produce the wole level.

The main objective was to create a Portal 2 Level that in order to solve it, the player didn't need to use any portal. That gave a challenge, because we were using a Level Editor made to create portal levels without any portals. Leaving JoanRa and me on a more classical aproach for a Puzzle.

To keep the level development a little more simple, we broke the level into rooms, each of them having a little puzzle with a specific mechanic.


The first room was about cubes and buttons, due to their amazing interation with Cube-Specific Buttons.


Starting up with a simple cube-button interaction, until the player doesn't interact with the cube, the level will not advance, because the only path is through the deadly water, were there are moving platforms, that depend on the button activation.


After the player activates the platform, will find that the exit is closed by a big wall, so they must access to a secret room on the left, to repeat the process with a little more of complexity.



Once the door is open, the player will access the next room, whe they will find the next simple puzzle.


Again, the path is locked by a wall, and on the left, there are multiple receivers and connectors.


Know with the knowledge on how to interact with a cube, the player can use the reflection cube to move the laser direction into the receiver that will open a trapdoor bellow.


Jumping doen the player will repeat the process of reflection that will activate other lasers that will open the door into the next and last room.



Now that the last room is open, the player will find multiple faith platforms on single pilars each.


The player must choose the right platform to start the jumping sequence.


Now that the jumping sequence is active, they must look at the automatic jump pattern to know when to jump off it.


If the player falls the jus must need to take the stairs back up and start over the jumping puzzle, and if they completed it, they jus need to touch the Pedestal Button to generate the platforms into the elevator.
